A parliamentary inquiry into birth trauma brought back tragic memories for Katie Fowler, who lost her daughter following maternity failings
A mother who lost her baby at only two days old has called for a national inquiry into maternity care, saying NHS services need a complete overhaul.
Mrs Fowler, 38, said more mothers would be left at risk unless a national inquiry takes place. Her warning followsThe parliamentary inquiry into birth trauma is calling for a national plan to improve maternity care, as it claimed women are often “treated as an inconvenience”. “Understaffing is of course an issue but I don’t think that alone explains the number of women who feel they were bullied, or patronised, or dismissed during labour,” she said.
Mrs Fowler said one of the key changes she wanted made was to the telephone triage system, which she believes create unnecessary risk for mothers and babies., for new mothers and babies to have separate health checks at six weeks so the doctor can fully assess the mother’s mental and physical health and additional efforts to reduce the risk of birth injuries.
