The small cast give strong performances
In a fraught working-class suburb of South London in the early 1980s, My Beautiful Laundrette tells the story of a young man with dreams of living on his own terms.
The pair clearly have a history, and it doesn't take long before sparks begin to fly - despite the anger and disgust of Johnny's white nationalist clique and the mounting pressure on Omar to marry his cousin Tania , who has dreams of her own.READ MORE: John Lewis' spring dress that 'skims the body' is back in stock
Less enthralling is Gordon Warnecke, whose grasp on his twin roles as Omar's alcoholic Papa and one of Nasser's cronies, Zaki, is somewhat shaky, with both characters almost blending into one as he provides identical performances. This was disappointing, as Warnecke starred as Omar in the original 1985 My Beautiful Laundrette alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in one of his earliest roles.
Hareet Deol and Paddy Daly make up the remainder of the small cast, both giving strong, physical performances.
