EXCLUSIVE: A year on from the death of Queen Elizabeth II, close childhood friend and lady-in-waiting Lady Anne Glenconner recalls many fond memories of the monarch

The death of Queen Elizabeth II last year sent shockwaves across the globe. Now, as the country prepares to mark the monumental anniversary, that grief is still relatively raw.

Here, in this exclusive and very timely interview, Lady Anne reflects on her personal pain over the Queen’s passing, and sheds light on what it was really like growing up with the most famous woman in the world. Queen Elizabeth II: Forever In Our Hearts, OK! Collector's Edition In this special collector's edition of OK!, we mark the first anniversary of Her Majesty's death by reflecting on her incredible life and legacy.

The late Queen was always a great joy to be around, recalls Lady Anne – who became a Baroness when her husband Colin Tennant inherited his father’s title in 1983. Despite being one of the busiest women in the world, the late monarch never forgot her dearest friends. Something else that characterised the late Queen’s reign, beyond her unwavering sense of duty, was her love of animals – and dogs in particular.Lady Anne recalls the time when her mother’s dog met the Queen.

“Prince Charles and Princess Anne were so small when she became Queen and she just had so much to do. In those days, it took ages to get to countries so she didn’t have a great deal of time to be with her older two. “I was three years old when they used to come to Holkham, which is only 10 miles from Sandringham,” she says. “The Queen Mother would bring Elizabeth and Margaret to visit. The first time I saw themThe Queen was always wonderful because she was quite a bit older and more serious, but she always had an eye out for her younger sister.

On another occasion she remembers the Queen admonishing Margaret for a cheeky trick that she played during a holiday to Glamis Castle, one of the royals’ Scottish residences. “We only got to do one full practice with the Queen there. Every other time we had the Duchess of Norfolk standing in as her. But I do remember going to Buckingham Palace and the Queen had a curtain tied around her waist.

Fast forward 70 years and Lady Anne returned to the Abbey, this time as a guest for the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, making her one of only a handful of people, including Andrew Parker Bowles, to be present for both ceremonies. Because she hadn’t been educated with groups of children, she hadn’t built up the necessary immunity.
