“About once a year, they [CAMHS] tell me my son is still on a waiting list and that’s it. It’s been years of warring with local authorities trying to get some services.” “I’ve fought tooth and nail for what we have now, and we have nothing. It’s just making sure I don’t die, so I can keep trying to find what they need. You get frozen out of society. I can’t work; I can’t get any services. It’s like you’re just shouting at a void.”Between April and June 2021were referred to CAMHS, up 134 per cent on the same period the year before.
David Smith’s* 11-year-old son was seen by CAMHS for the first time in December 2022, following a two-year wait. Smith has two adopted children, and says his pre-teen suffered with “adoption-related trauma”. For those with eating disorders, she says, “young people found it much easier to hide weight loss sometimes. They would be in baggy clothes in their bedrooms so things were not getting picked up”.
