Social anxiety might be on the rise, nightclubs might be closing down, and Charli XCX might have declared that the ‘dance floor is dead’ in her recent single, Rock Music, but Melanie Chisholm thinks otherwise.

In fact, she’s released a dance-pop album, Sweat, to prove quite how alive it really is.

‘Not from where I’m standing,’ she quips when asked if partying is a thing of the past. ‘I think post-pandemic we had all those crazy years when we didn’t go out, and the change I’ve seen is really positive. I’m in my early 50s now, and I started raving in my late teens, and I feel like particularly my generation has re-embraced the dance floor. Our kids are a bit older now.

Some of us are going out raving with our kids. It’s like we’ve remembered how important that release is. ’with her daughter, Scarlet Starr, 17, the Spice Girl clearly practices what she preaches.

‘I did my first Pacha show,’ she beams. ‘There are definitely people who want to go out, who want to party and have a good time. We need it for our existence. ’ Sweat is Melanie C's ninth record and marks the first time she’s boldly entered dance music territory, having been DJing the genre since 2018.

‘I was really trying to bring who I am as a solo artist closer to what I play as a DJ, and I play a lot of multi-genre house, but I am known as a pop artist. I always have been. ’ As one fifth of one of the world’s most famous girlbands, she’s right about that, and Melanie C is nothing if not loyal to her longtime fans.

The whole aesthetic of the album, and indeed the costumes she will be wearing on tour in September, riffs off her.

‘I’ve really lent into that aesthetic,’ she admits. ‘I’m having a lot of fun dressing in a really sporty way, and really embracing fitness. And it’s in the music, lyrically, as well, it’s really upbeat. ’ Naturally, that means she will be turning to her Oakley Meta Vanguard sunglasses on stage instead of her usual Ray Ban mega-wayfarers.sunglasses is one of her outfit staples , whether she's at an event, behind the decks or performing at festivals around the world.

‘You have to be really honest about what works for your face shape,’ she advises, as we plunge into heatwave and festival season. ‘Sunglass Hut is one of those places where you can really try different personalities through frames - it’s fun exploring what feels like you in the moment. ' ‘There’s something about sunglasses, isn’t there? ' the Sunglass Hut global ambassador continues.

'It’s almost like there’s a little bit of protection from the world – like an armour you can wear. When I see other people wear them, I think, wow, they look so cool. ’ As a veteran festival-goer, Melanie C encourages anyone planning their outfits this summer not to neglect their eyewear.

‘When you’re putting your festival outfits together, definitely have a pair of sunglasses to coordinate with that outfit, rather than just one pair for the weekend. It’s the time to have fun with fashion! ’ Fun, it seems, is the through line in everything Melanie C does.

It’s what motivated her latest album, inspired her to take her teenager to Ibiza for a weekend in half term, and why she is so passionate about finding and sharing joy on the dance floor.

‘There are so many things about the world which are dark, and we need to come together and unify, and I think socialising and letting go on the dance floor and at gigs and festivals is so important,' as she puts it. 'If everything was all work and news and politics then it would be a very dull place. I’m very happy to be making this kind of music now.
