‘The grief of losing my son never goes away, now I'm supporting other young people’
Sadly, Kimberley Morgan experienced the pain of losing a child in November 2021 when her son Gryff died by suicide when he was just 18 years old. Nearly two years on from his tragic death, 41 year old Kimberley is working to raise awareness of mental health and has set up Gryff’s Mind Space to help young people to access activities such as talking therapies and massage.
Sport was a great outlet for Gryff. He swam competitively for a club and loved rugby, football and boxing. But by the time he was in his teens he’d started to realise that his mind worked differently to other people’s and he found it hard to accept. He wanted to be like everyone else but his mind wouldn’t let him.
He was there for several weeks and put on anti-psychotic medication. I longed to give him a hug, to tell him everything would be alright, but because of Covid restrictions we were only able to see him through a window. It was heartbreaking. A tragic discovery All the lights were on at the caravan when I arrived. The TV was on and, surprisingly, everything was immaculate when it was usually very untidy. As I glanced towards the lounge area I saw him. I tried desperately to help him and when I couldn’t I stumbled out of the caravan, retching and sobbing. I’d forgotten my phone so I had to drive home to get Jason. We were both distraught, in complete disbelief that Gryff was dead. We’d never considered that this might happen.
