As the Government sees off a rebellion over the controversial benefit cut, some pensioners will rely on adult children to help them
Conor Sharkey’s mother is a proud, self-sufficient woman who worked all her life as a shop assistant – but now she is facing a difficult winter, as one of millions of pensioners losing the £300
Sharkey’s mother was employed as a shop assistant in Asda until five years ago, but she worked overtime and sometimes an extra job to pay the mortgage off on her three-bedroom terraced house alone. When she finally owned it outright, they had a party to celebrate. “The concern that I and many colleagues have is that people will fall through the safety net. The fear is that, if we withdraw the winter fuel payments for those in fuel poverty, it will lead to excess deaths.”
