I took a sharp intake of breath when I read the latest research linking cannabis use to schizophrenia, writes GeorgieR30 ✒️ It seemed even more timely to stumble across it on the anniversary of my late brother, Charlie, leaving this world aged 33

football tragedy in 1989 where 97 people died. Charlie, a lifelong Aston Villa fan and season ticket holder, was convinced that the whole thing had been a cover-up. He wasn’t entirely wrong, of course, but he began to talk about the CIA and people watching him. By the time he wasCharlie was a huge animal lover

He spent the next 21 years in and out of psychiatric units. At the time of his death he was taking several different types of medication and drinking heavily. We still don’t really know what happened to him. He was much more than just his schizophrenia though. His life may have ended in tragedy but it wasn’t a tragic life. He was a great artist, a huge animal lover and a Pink Floyd fan. He had a wicked sense of humour, a dry wit and could be very funny at times. He loved Viz, Monty Python and Rick Mayall. When I was little, he would read me Fungus the Bogeyman and tickle me until I weed. I once asked him, as a terribly self-conscious 15 year old, if he thought I was pretty.

I was living in London when he died and hadn’t seen him for a few months. The call, from my stepfather, came out of the blue. I was 26. The guilt that I hadn’t been there, was overwhelming. Nothing will ever bring my brother back but helping other families to stop something like this happening has to be worth something. We need more research like this, to provide families like ours with answers and help prevent other families from needlessly suffering.
