A heartwarming story about a stylish mother and her search for companionship.

My mum has always been chic and glamorous. My friends at school all said so, and on many social occasions I can recall introducing her to people and getting the “I thought she was your older sister” reaction, which I know my mum rather liked. She’s called Pauline – known as “P” to the family, and even though she has five grandchildren she is most definitely not to be referred to as “Gran”. I think if anyone called her “Nan” they might find themselves being shown the door.

The contract negotiations between me and my mum to be able to write a column about her were tough: one of the stipulations from Pauline’s side was that I couldn’t reveal her age so I will honour that but, well, I’m 56 so I’m sure you can have a good guess. At this time of year we might all cast an eye towards 2025 and hope for good things. My mum is no different. Fairly recently, she moved South from our native Lancashire to be closer to her family, most of whom gravitated towards the capital years ago. Despite being nearer to her kids and grandkids, there is a bit missing in her life: companionship. I mentioned that my mum looks fabulous – and that’s helped by the fact that she takes care of herself. She’s never smoked, watches what she eats, still does yoga and apart from the odd glass of fizz and a big hairdressing budget, doesn’t really have any vices. Pauline’s been lucky in one way – she has had two big loves in her life; but unlucky in that they are both no longer with us. The first was Des, a man for whom the phrase “larger-than-life” was invented. He treated Pauline like a duchess: he cooked, he waited on her, he took her to appropriately lovely places, whether they were restaurants in Manchester or hotels in Mustique. He was funny, generous, loving, daft and packed all of those qualities into an absurdly short 56 years. One day, following a stroke, he was no longer with us. He left a chasm in all our lives but none bigger than in Pauline’
