🎙️ Now ITV’s voice of Cheltenham, RichardHoiles never really thought of a career in racing until he saw an advert in the newspaper
His apparently unassuming nature is perhaps born of the happenstance that introduced him to the sport.“My dad used to watch the ITV Seven on a Saturday afternoon. I didn’t really take a great deal of notice in it initially, but we went to Plumpton on a bank holiday and there were race cards with numbers in so it was the first time I’d really seen that.It appealed to his numbers brain too.
Instead, he qualified as an accountant and, having quickly become very bored of auditing other people’s accounts, he answered an advert in the paper for a commentator. “About halfway through that 20 minutes he stopped I thought ‘Okay he’s done his service to Mum now, he’s done’.Cheltenham is the Olympics of horse racing that runs for a week every year
“I remember long conversations with [my grandmother], saying, ‘I’m backing this at 2-1 or 5-2 or what have you’ and you get a big puff of air, I’d say to her ‘Nan if I was telling you there was a share that was underpriced in my suit as a stockbroker, you’d be telling me that it was perfectly acceptable! Just because my skill is in horses…’
