There are, in fact, a lot of King Charles spaniel appreciation groups online, and while they seem to be a nice breed of dog, that’s not quite what I was after., I spot a woman buying Union Jack bunting so I approach her gently and ask: “Hi, really sorry to disturb you, but I’m looking for people who adore King Charles, and was wondering whether you are one of them?”
I wait around for a bit, until I spot a woman heading for the coronation paper cups. “Hi, sorry to disturb you, are you a King Charles superfan… or even just a slight fan?”A coronation partyDoes she know any King Charles superfans? I’ll go wherever they are. I’ll do anything. She looks at me the way one might look at a sad-looking stray dog and says: “No, sorry. I mean, my grandma loved the Queen – she really related to her – but she doesn’t seem that into Charles.
Any real fervour for Charles, it seems, springs from the US, a place where King Charles is not actually the monarch. Royal superfan Donna Werner has flown over from Connecticut to London and has pitched a tent along the procession route to secure a front-row seat for the coronation.wedding, for Will and Kate’s, for Harry and Meghan’s, a few of the Queen’s birthdays and a couple of jubilees.
This morning, I was excited to get a text response from one of the people I queued next to during the late Queen’s lying-in-state. At the time, we talked at length about her love for the royals, but I realise now we didn’t touch on Charles.
