Troubling numbers of physical restraint are being used on vulnerable children at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
As John Genca was forced to hold down his son’s legs, with a nurse restraining his arms, the pair had to scream for help. Genca said he was told by the nurse at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead “we are not trained for this – we don’t know what to do when this happens”.
. Of the 36 acute mental health episodes at the hospital from April to June 2023, physical restraint was used 26 times. “I just can’t accept that living in Australia this is normal. We shouldn’t have nurses who say we don’t know how to help kids who are neurodiverse or in crisis,” he says.BHI data is analysed at a rate per 1000 beds to enable comparison of public hospitals across the state. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead deployed physical restraint at a rate of 40.6, the highest of any NSW public facility.
