'My toddler forgot how to crawl and talk overnight - now she's locked in her body'
For the first two years of her life, Ruby Pollard was a perfectly healthy little girl. She could crawl, use her hands and say words like ‘mama’ and ‘papa’.
Rett syndrome is a rare disorder which causes severe mental and physical disability. The condition is estimated to affect about one in 12,000 girls born each year and is only rarely seen in boys. Not only can Rett syndrome lead to problems with brain development, it can also cause epilepsy – something five-year-old Ruby, from the Partington area of Trafford , has now started suffering from.
“I don’t know what’s scarier – the seizures of the syndrome. She was diagnosed with epilepsy in March this year. She’s on medication now. These symptoms typically begin from 6 to 18 months and often last for several months, although they can persist for a year or more. Stage one can often go unnoticed because the changes occur gradually and may be subtle.
But the family were recently made aware of a special mobility trike which would help Ruby use alternative transport other than her wheelchair.
