I have a lot of motor tics that make me move all the time so things that normal couples would do like cuddling I don’t want to do because I’m constantly moving and that’s uncomfortable for me to stay in one place for a long period of time. I wouldn’t just sit and watch a movie curled up with someone.
Stevenson, now 59, has been married for 30 years, prior to being diagnosed with Tourette’s. It wasn’t until he experienced emotional trauma when one of his close friends was murdered and another died by, that Stevenson’s tics became obvious. At the crematorium during his friend’s funeral he got his first tic and within a few weeks he was involuntarily saying complex sentences and experiencing sudden body movements.
Tics can also be physically and mentally exhausting and just three hours out in public can drain Stevenson, especially if he tries to suppress them. When he works away from home, he and his wife often take days to themselves afterwards to recover. “I have to take the time out to recuperate and start functioning again as a dad and husband,” he says.
