We were just about to move into the rectory when Rishi Sunak called the July election
Are my wife and I mad? We are both in our seventies. We could be putting our feet up, enjoying the fruits of a lifetime of labour. Yet we are both working full-time.
In my wife’s case the decision has been more deliberate. Lisa did retire from her role as a social scientist – but then decided to pursue a call she had long felt to train as an Anglican priest. Living north of the border, as we have done for over 30 years, that meant being accepted by the Scottish Episcopal. She trained for three years then did three years as a curate. This was all unpaid, and finished earlier this year. The next step was expected to be a role as a part-time, unpaid priest.
You can imagine what my wife said when Rishi Sunak unexpectedly decided to hold the election in early July instead! As a result, much of the planning for the move – scheduled for little more than two weeks after polling day – fell on her shoulders. When I am asked whether I have recovered from the election, my reply is a variation on, “Well, eventually”.
