A CSIRO team discovered a dormant star waking up with 'unusual radio pulses' after being silent for years.
A radio telescope has observed a peculiar and complex activity of a magnetar located roughly 8,000 light years away from the Earth.
”Unlike the radio signals we’ve seen from other magnetars, this one is emitting enormous amounts of rapidly changing circular polarization. We had never seen anything like this before,” said Marcus Lower, a postdoctoral fellow at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency.known in the universe. Scientists study these objects to understand the processes responsible for generating such strong magnetic fields and how they impact the surrounding space environment.
“The signals emitted from this magnetar imply that interactions at the surface of the star are more complex than previous theoretical explanations,” said Manisha Caleb from the University of Sydney and co-author of the study. The discovery is incredibly important as radio pulses from magnetars are rare. The researchers don’t know what’s causing the strange signals coming from this magnetar, but they hypothesize one possible answer.

Australia's Conservative Politicians Attack CSIRO for Affirming Renewables as Cheapest Energy SourceAustralia's conservative politicians and the Rupert Murdoch media are attacking the CSIRO for reaffirming that renewables are the cheapest form of electricity generation. The CSIRO report shows that nuclear small modular reactors are the highest-cost technology. Peter Dutton, the conservative federal Opposition leader, has accused the CSIRO of manipulating the figures. However, CSIRO's CEO has defended the report and warned against disparaging science. The report clearly includes the costs of renewables and their integration into the grid.
