In a message to the archdiocese of La Plata in Argentina, Gabriel Antonio Mestre said he had been 'very happy' during his time as archbishop.
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of an archbishop who served in the role for less than a year, the Vatican has said.Francis 'has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of La Plata, Argentina, presented by Archbishop Gabriel Antonio Mestre,' the Vatican said in a statement on Monday.No reason was given for Mestre's sudden resignation. The Vatican has been contacted for comment via email.
'I have enjoyed every encounter with lay people of all ages, with consecrated men and women, with seminarians, deacons, priests and auxiliary bishops. Thank you for making me feel at home!' Mestre said.'It pains me to leave, it pains me to leave you as pastor of this Particular Church that is on pilgrimage in La Plata, but I am sure that God has much better plans that I cannot finish deciphering today,' he said.
