Ariel Atkins and Shakira Austin are still in place, but much has changed for Washington, which has the No. 6 pick.

CLEVELAND — Shakira Austin bounced back and forth near center court as Ariel Atkins lined up for a half-court shot near the end of a recent Team USA workout. The national team’s final session was held on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ practice court ahead of the women’s Final Four, and the two Washington Mystics standouts were among, Austin and Atkins aren’t a bad place to start building the next foundation of Mystics basketball.

Washington holds the No. 6, No. 21 and No. 30 picks in the three-round event. The Indiana Fever , forward Cameron Brink , forward Aaliyah Edwards , center Kamilla Cardoso and forward Angel Reese are expected to be in the next group of players selected. But the Mystics seem to be in the market for a guard or a wing who can create her own shot and boost a three-point percentage that ranked seventh out of 12 WNBA teams.

The Mystics are remaking the roster, but the cupboard is far from bare. Only seven WNBA teams were represented at Team USA training camp, and only five had two participants. Atkins is one of the most consistent players in the league, and Austin has only scratched the surface of her potential. She plans to take the next step toward becoming a “dominant player” and leader.“Regardless of who was coming back this year, my mentality was to change,” Austin said.

That’s the tricky spot for the Mystics. Adding better players in the 2025 draft would put the organization on a faster track to returning to contention. But that could mean a lot of losing — and competitors such as Atkins, Austin and Sykes aren’t the type to accept that. “I think are going to determine a lot about how our team acts and competes and everything else,” Thibault said.Capitals’ Nick Jensen is ‘doing better’ after scary hit into boards
