The director of recreation for Brick Township kept cash paid by private organizations when issuing permits for private groups to use the town’s athletic fields, authorities said Thursday.

Daniel Santaniello, 46, required certain organizations “to pay him directly in cash, rather than issuing checks to the township,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement. Santaniello was charged Wednesday with theft and forgery. Township Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said Thursday morning that Santaniello has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the police investigation.
