Forecasters say isolated tornadoes could touch down in any area of New Jersey on Friday.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for parts of New Jersey. A watch is not as urgent as a warning, but means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop.The tornado watch — which is not as urgent as a tornado warning — is effective through 2 p.m. Friday and includes Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties.
The weather service says the heavy rain could spark rapid flooding on roads and highways, and also could cause some rivers and streams to overflow because many areas of the state are already saturated from this week’s heavy rain and lighter rain that fell last week and last weekend. “When a tropical system stays west of us, since the winds are in a counter-clockwise flow, we get southerly winds,” Lee told NJ Advance Media. “That means there’s warm, moist air coming in , so we get some really good instability available to us.”
“We want to make sure folks are prepared for the possibility of isolated tornadoes , all across the state,” Lee said.
