A drug sniffing dog found the marijuana when the Spirit flight landed in St. Croix on Sept. 27.
A 23-year-old New Jersey woman tried to smuggle nearly 25 pound of marijuana in Christmas wrapping paper on a Spirit Airlines flight last week to the U.S. Virgin Islands, federal officials said.
Agents then placed the luggage on the baggage claim and investigators waited to see who would retrieve it.The marijuana was in vacuum sealed packages wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper, authorities said. The friend had told her it contained new clothes he bought for her for the trip, according to court papers. When the two arrived at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport, the man told her he would get a cab while she retrieved their luggage, authorities said.
