A retired US General has responded with shock to WA Premier Mark McGowan's 'stunning' suggestion to improve relations with Beijing, saying he is surprised there are still people 'that naïve' about China.
When asked about the idea during an interview with Sky News Australia’s Andrew Bolt, General Jack Keane, the former vice chief of staff for the United States Army, described the suggestion as “stunning”.
“I’m surprised that we still have people out there that are that naïve about dealing with China and who they really are,” General Keane said. The retired US General is a foreign policy and national security expert who currently sits on the US Commission on National Defense Strategy, a congressional committee tasked with making recommendations on America’s military force structure and national security risks.
“After all, many countries – the United States and others like Australia – had a lot to do with helping develop a form of capitalism within China, thinking naively… that if they had economic reform political reform would follow.”
