But Labour need to be more honest about their own tax plans for an ageing society
From his Prada shoes to his unfamiliarity with contactless card payments, the perception of Sunak as an awkwardly wealthy man is certainly going to be weaponised by the Opposition at the next election. When his spokeswoman was asked what his favourite cake was today, she said it was “carrot or red velvet cake”, but for some voters it could easily have been millionaire’s shortbread.
Of course, the real reason any of Sunak’s wealth or family tax status mattered was because he was a Chancellor who whacked taxes up for millions who were nowhere near as well off.from the public that Sunak may struggle with in an election campaign. And as Boris Johnson ultimately learned, “one rule for them, one for the rest of us”, is always a toxic charge.
The move is not just a direct pitch for the “motorists’ vote” that the Tories have often cornered for themselves . It is part of a wider assault by Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves to portray their opponents as rich men who slap taxes on ordinary people who are struggling with the cost of living. Some on the left think that Labour’s regular use of tax as a dirty word actually undermines the wider case that some taxes need to rise to fund basic public services.
Reeves has been very careful to talk about “fairer taxes” rather than just higher taxes. As well as Big Oil giants profiteering from Putin, her other bad-guy tax targets include non-doms, private schools , private equity firms, buy-to-let landlords, wealthy folks who deal in stocks and shares.
