No 10 is set to reject calls for an overhaul of the ministerial ethics regime in theRishi Sunak believes that the current system works as long as ministers are honest about any potential conflicts of interest,And most Conservative backbenchers appear to back his position – characterising Mr Zahawi as a bad apple who wasLabour’s Angela Rayner and Anneliese Dodds have written to the Prime Minister calling for changes to how ministers’ ethics are monitored, including allowing the adviser to launch...
Ms Rayner, the party’s deputy leader, said: “The Conservatives have neither the interest nor the ability to clean up politics. Only Labour has a plan to clean up politics through a genuinely independent Integrity and Ethics Commission to restore standards in public life, and end the Tory sleaze.” Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran questioned why Mr Zahawi was able to send threatening legal letters to journalists investigating his tax affairs without being slapped down by the Prime Minister.
She said: “This glaring omission raises serious unanswered questions. Did Zahawi inform the Attorney General of these legal proceedings as he would be required to under the ministerial code? And what action is the Government taking to prevent Cabinet ministers behaving in this way in future?” Mr Sunak is expected to shoot down any calls for a systemic change, however. A source close to the Prime Minister said: “Transparency is the key, it’s the responsibility of ministers to be transparent about their interests and if they are then the system works.”
