I have lived in the area for 30 years and have to admit it's not a term I've ever heard. Yet Plum Sykes' new book's release has already set drinks parties alight with intense speculation.
There was I thinking I'd have to do a last-minute bookshop dash at the airport while hurriedly packing for my holiday, when, direct from the author Plum Sykes herself, a copy of her latest book, Wives Like Us, landed through the letter box. Problem sorted, I thought, as I zipped up my suitcase — my poolside read was secure.
The fictional chararacters in Plum Sykes's book are recognisable in real life, whizzing around the perilous country lanes in brand-new, black Range Rovers with cream leather interiors I have something in common with the people Plum writes about, who love the idea of being part of the country elite. I spent the first 25 years of my life on an estate where the occasional shooting weekend took place. The difference being that my estate in Liverpool was owned by the council.
Plum Sykes's new book is set in the Cotswolds and features a group of super-rich, designer-clad women referred to as the 'Country Princesses' There were invitations to drinks and parties as well as a request that I attend a debating society meeting in the village hall and propose the motion: 'Life is too short to stuff a mushroom.'
'People from their background don't buy a house like that unless there's something funny going on. It just doesn't happen.''Probably criminal money,' said the first. On Valentine's night in 1995 Nadine visited a Cotswold village for the very first time with her late husband
