Many viewers complained about Naga's 'political bias' over the Black Lives Matter protests.
In response to both, the BBC backed the journalist and her line of questioning, dismissing accusations that she was supporting criminal activity and commending her ‘professional and fair’ interview with Sunak.‘Naga Munchetty certainly does not endorse criminal behaviour, and she made it clear at the start and end of the interview that Bristol City Council did not approve the statue,’ the BBC said in its first statement.
‘The issue of statues of people involved in the slave trade and the Black Lives Matter movement have been well documented across BBC News, and BBC Breakfast has held many discussions over the past few weeks in regards to these issues.‘During this time we have heard people with arguments in defence of and against such statues.’
‘Naga Munchetty’s interview with Chancellor Rishi Sunak on BBC Breakfast on 9 July 2020 was a professional, fair and informative analysis of his statement to Parliament the previous day,’ the BBC’s executive complaints unit said in its second statement.
