Prince Jean-Christophe Napoleon had given the jewellery to Countess Olympia von Arco-Zinneberg as an engagement ring.

Police obtained an image from the hotel's CCTV and arrested the thief at his home on Saturday.

A police source told French media that the suspect is a 30-year-old Egyptian already known for theft.A Paris prosecutor told The Daily Telegraph:"An individual was placed in custody of the chiefs of flight, swindle and attempted fraud, and the jewel found. "The investigators did a wonderful job. It was a real race against the clock because the thief could get rid of the jewel at any time."Jean Christophe, a direct descendant of Napoleon III, works as an investment banker in London.

Countess von Arco-Zinneberg is the daughter of Count Riprand of Arco-Zinneburg and Archduchess Maria Beatrice of Austria-Este.Jean-Christophe is therefore a great-great-great-great nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte himself.
