NASA awarded a $2M grant to the Southwest Research Institute to develop an advanced, small instrument to study the depths of lunar regolith.
The purpose of this instrument is to survey the depth of the lunar regolith and upper megaregolith, offering key insights into the formation and evolution of the Earth’s natural satellite. The grant has been awarded under NASA’s Development and Advancement of Lunar Instrumentation program.
Megaregolith is defined as the upper “broken-up layers of lunar crust” generated as a result of impact craters. “If we are able to pinpoint exactly where this layer begins, we can use that to create more accurate formation and evolution models,” Stillman added.
