For years, NASA has relied on radio waves to communicate with spacecraft. But lasers are much faster and more efficient.

NASA tested its first two-way, end-to-end laser relay system through this experiment. The agency used laser technology to send data at speeds of 1.2 gigabits per second, which is far quicker than downloading a movie. . In this demonstration, a video of an orange cat was delivered 19 million kilometers via laser connections to the Psyche spacecraft’s DSOC payload.
“Not only have they demonstrated how these technologies can play an essential role in enabling NASA’s future science and exploration missions, it also provided a fun opportunity for the teams to “picture” their pets assisting with this innovative demonstration,” said Kevin Coggins, deputy associate administrator, and SCaN program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
“Teams modulated the data onto infrared light signals, or lasers, and sent the signals to NASA’s LCRD located 22,000 miles above Earth in geosynchronous orbit,” NASA
