NASA says there's no set return date for two Boeing Starliner crew as NASA and Boeing investigates issues with the craft seen during docking.
NASA says there’s no set return date for the two Starliner astronauts aboard the ISS, saying it wants to investigate the thruster issues it saw during docking.NASA doesn’t have a return date yet for astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams who flew aboard a Boeing Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station on June 5, during which several helium leaks and thruster issues were identified.
“I want to reiterate, also, that Starliner remains available in cases of an emergency or contingency on the space station where the crew would have to return very quickly back to Earth,” Stich stressed. Stich said that Wilmore and Williams entered the Starliner capsule, powered it up, and sealed themselves inside, ready to make an emergency departure from the ISS if necessary. The process worked exactly as intended and no issues with the capsule were found during the procedure.
On-ground testing at the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico is set to begin on July 2 to simulate how the thrusters performed during the flight to and docking with the ISS to help identify what caused five of the craft’s thrusters to behave abnormally during the ISS docking procedure on June 6.
