Possibly scanning for data and information about the new supervolcano that is slowly forming in Southern California.Nasa hasn’t commented publically on what it’s plane was doing over the faultline, but we can glean from the agency’s Airborne Science website that the DC-8-70 plane ‘provides a unique set of Nasa supported aircraft that benefit the earth science community’.

It’s also been modified to ‘carry the sensors that provide data to support and augment NASA spaceborne missions.’.‘space plane’ designated X-37BIt was built by Boeing and is flown remotely. The craft – also known as Orbital Test Vehicle 4 – is on a mission the U.S. will only describe as ‘classified’.

The X-37B space plane is currently on its fifth mission and, in the process, has passed 500 consecutive days in orbit. A sixth mission is expected to begin sometime later this year, although we aren’t sure when.
