NASA put out a request for the private sector to take over its VIPER rover, and Intuitive Machines answered the call.

Intuitive Machines is looking to take over a four-wheeled lunar rover after NASA called off its planned trip to the Moon due to budget constraints.from NASA seeking interest from organizations that would want to partner with the space agency on sending its rover to the Moon, company officialsin a recent earnings call.

Hopefully, it’ll have better luck with VIPER. During the call, Intuitive Machines officials revealed that the lunar rover could ride on board its upcoming Nova-D lander . The rover would then launch sometime in late 2027. NASA has turned to the private sector for help before. In 2018, the space agency called off the Lunar Resources Prospector , another lunar rover with similar objectives. However, after rolling out its Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, NASA promised to fly LRP on a future private mission to the Moon.
