Luckily, ESA’s Hera spacecraft is on a mission to investigate the aftermath firsthand. Launching in October, it will reach the asteroid by late 2026 and uncover DART’s detailed impact. The software was developed over 20 years ago at the University of Bern. It can mimic the bumpy breakup of rocky bodies by describing them as millions of particles. These particles interact based on various parameters such as density, material strength, and gravity.
