Spaceflight increased immune gene activity and made tumors grow more in the flies which are part of the NASA experiment.
While the fruit fly immune system is not exactly the same as the mammalian immune system, there are many similarities between them.
The new study has widened scientists’ understanding of how fruit flies’ immune systems interact with natural parasites in space. In this FFL-03 mission, the study analyzed the effects of the space environment on innate immunity, which is the branch of the immune system responsible for quick, non-specific responses to infection.Scientists term it an important subject to study as immune system dysfunction, and infections are major risks for astronauts during space missions.
As per the findings, spaceflight increased immune gene activity and made tumors grow more in the flies. The wasps remained harmful in space, but some developed inheritable physical changes.included “aurum” and “kona” . Female wasps with two copies of the “kona” mutation could not lay eggs because of defective egg-laying organs.
