Nasa warns that astronauts live in danger after India missile attack on satellite creates orbital debris
that could smash into ISSBy Harry Pettit, Senior Digital Technology and Science ReporterNASA has blasted India for firing off a high tech space missile that obliterated a satellite in Earth's orbit.
Tiny pieces of the satellite now sit in Earth's orbit and could collide with the International Space Station, which is currently home to six people, including three Americans.last week, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi boasting that the country is now a "space power". Not everyone shared Modi's enthusiasm for the news, with Nasa boss Jim Bridenstine branding it a "terrible, terrible thing".He said several hundred pieces of debris identified over the course of 10 days after the test caused a 44% increase in a collision risk with the ISS."We need to be clear with everybody in the world, we're the only agency in the federal government that has human lives at stake here," he said.
India successfully tested an ASAT on a low-orbit satellite "some time ago", Prime Minister Modi claimed last week. The feat makes India just the fourth country to possess ASAT tech, after the United States, China and Russia.
