NASCAR has suspended Bubba Wallace for one race for intentionally crashing Kyle Larson last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the sanctioning body announced Tuesday. Wallace will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he was scheduled to drive the No. 45 Toyota for 23XI Racing, the team co-owned by Michael Jordan.
Though payback and retaliation are commonplace in the full-contact world of stock car racing, Wallace’s move clearly crossed a line in NASCAR’s eyes. Angered by contact from Larson that put Wallace’s car in the wall while the two were racing side-by-side off Turn 4 at Las Vegas, Wallace chased Larson’s car down the track and hooked the No. 5 in the right rear.
That is viewed as a dangerous move at high-speed tracks like Las Vegas because it turns a car toward a head-on collision with the wall while traveling approximately 170 mph. Larson’s car ended up hitting the car driven by Christopher Bell before he made full contact with the wall, which may have prevented an injury to Larson.
After the crash, Wallace got out of his car and walked across the track to confront Larson. He then shoved Larson several times as the smaller driver put his hands up in a defensive position before they were separated. Wallace issued an apology via his social media on Monday for his actions following the on-track incident with Larson.. “Upon reflecting, I should have represented our partners and core team values better than I did by letting my frustrations follow me outside the car. You live and learn, and I intend to learn from this.
