Díaz y Masvidal pelearon por primera vez por el título inaugural de UFC, BMF, en UFC 244 en noviembre de 2019. La pelea se detuvo después del tercer asalto debido a que Díaz sufrió una laceración. El duelo será el segundo combate de boxeo profesional de Masvidal tras su victoria de 2005 sobre Joseph Benjamin. Díaz debutó en el ring en agosto de 2023 con una derrota por decisión ante Jake Paul.
