Eovaldi gutted through six innings, stranding nine runners, to lead the Rangers to their first World Series championship.
PHOENIX — The World Series champion did it their way until the end. Their way, yes, looked like spending hundreds of millions of dollars on big names, bashing bundles of home runs, avoiding the underbelly of their bullpen and holding on for dear life in the late innings. None of that is wrong, and yet it hardly tells the whole story of how the captured a championship that had for so long eluded their franchise.
The opportunity the Rangers seized on the first of November might never have come about if not for their vaunted right-handed pitcher. Texas made bigger moves in the quest to bolster its pitching over the past year. The Rangers signed in the winter and traded for and in the summer. Eovaldi had dialogues with the Rangers in the offseason, but as he saw the team’s moves from afar, he assumed the Rangers would be done adding pitching.
