in Maine, a national coalition is making recommendations about how to prevent a tragedy like it from happening again.
On Friday, the National Shattering Silence Coalition laid out the recommendations they are going to give to the commission investigating the Lewiston mass shooting. A critical piece, they say, is training for anyone who deals with mental health patients and to increase collaboration between mental health workers and law enforcement.
"I want to talk today about a crucial part of our mental health process that is sadly lacking. A part that in Robert Card's case, may have changed the course of tragedy," said Laura Snyder from the coalition. "That is training of all people involved in the process of responding to a person with a serious brain disorder who is demonstrating dangerous and threatening behavior.
Another recommendation is better use of what's called the progressive treatment program, which allows a court to commit a patient to psychiatric care for up to 12 months and may also prohibit them from owning firearms.
