The Prime Minister said: 'This bold action will enable young people to give back to the communities that raised them'

All 18-year-olds will have to take part in national service – if the Conservatives win the general election on 4 July. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is now on a mission to convince parents his idea is a good idea.

Speaking on X, Rishi Sunak said: ‘Introducing National Service. Wondering how it will improve your or your child’s future?1. ‘Teens can choose how they do their national service’ Mr Sunak said: ‘Every 18-year-old will get the choice of how they do their National Service. In France, similar to the UK model, teens aged 15 to 17 must participate in national service. It includes a 12-day ‘cohesion stay’ where teens sing the national anthem, salute the flag and participate in various sports and activities. Teens must also complete 84 hours of volunteer work.

He said: ‘The Covid pandemic showed the value of civic service to individuals and our country as a whole. ‘Meaning that we’ll deliver National Service without raising a single tax and on top of our commitment to spend 2.5% of GDP on Defence by 2030.’ While others questioned the logistics: ‘As an 18-year-old who is sitting their A Levels and hoping to go to university in September, would national service impact my plans?’
