The National Transportation Safety Board met this morning in Washington to study the investigation into a near collision between two planes at Austin-Bergstrom

FILE - The National Transportation Safety Board logo and signage are seen at a news conference at NTSB headquarters in Washington, Dec. 18, 2017. Investigators said Thursday, June 6, 2024, that an incoming FedEx cargo plane came within less than 200 feet of hitting a Southwest Airlines jet last year in Austin, Texas, after both were cleared to use the same runway. The board found the airport lacked a key technological tool that could have prevented this from happening.

“Our goal is not to place blame,” said Homendy. “We want to learn from this incident, so it never happens again.” “Commercial aviation is by far our safest mode of transportation, but the somber truth is it only takes one,” said Homendy. According to the NTSB, the air traffic control operator couldn’t see the Southwest Plane on the taxiway due to poor visibility from dense fog. It insists that with the proper technology, the air traffic controller could have noticed the planes’ positions and halted the Southwest 708 flight from entering the runway.
