DJ Herz couldn’t get out of the fifth inning, and St. Louis pounced on Dylan Floro in relief.
The ball languidly rose and fell, hanging in the air as two Washington Nationals — left fielder James Wood and third baseman Trey Lipscomb — converged. Wood looked up and down, his gaze darting from the ball to Lipscomb.
Ultimately, that misplay would cost Washington a second run and force Herz to throw 10 more pitches, an added workload that had a ripple effect for an overworked staff. St. Louis knocked Herz out in the fifth inning, then cracked open Washington’s bullpen as the home team fell, 8-3, at Nationals Park.“We’re trying to get to that all-star break,” said Martinez, whose team has seven games to go. “We need some length . ... Hopefully we get that and give these guys a little bit of a break.
“It’s something I can’t control,” Herz said of the interference call. “... The walks came back to hurt me today, and that’s something I can control. So just worry about the things you can control and let the things that you can’t — let them go.Martinez first turned to right-hander Dylan Floro. He gave up three singles and let three runs score while getting just one out. Lefty Robert Garcia replaced him, striking out Gorman to end a seemingly unending top of the fifth.
But Washington’s bats went quiet soon after, hurt by untimely double plays. In the third inning, Winker lined out to third baseman Nolan Arenado, who threw to first to double up Wood. Yepez seemed to have a seeing-eye single in the fourth, but Winn dived to snag the grounder and start a double play. Yepez also grounded into a double play in the sixth with two runners on, halting a rally.
