Elizabeth, a gardening expert from Polytunnel Gardening , suggests that growing certain plants known to repel rats can effectively keep them out of your garden. She said: 'Some plants naturally deter rats due to their strong sense of smell, and filling your flower beds and vegetable patches with them can keep the pests away. 'Some rat deterrent plants you should consider include daffodils, garlic, lavender, sage, marigolds and oregano.' While it may seem odd, rats have highly sensitive noses and can easily be overwhelmed by flowers and herbs with potent fragrances. Plants like lavender are particularly effective - while their sweet, perfumed scent is pleasant for humans, it's extremely off-putting for rodents. Rats rely heavily on their sense of smell to find food and detect predators. If strong-smelling plants mask these scents, they're likely to deem the garden an unsuitable habitat. Some plants boast compounds that are unwelcoming to rodents, such as lycorine in daffodils. It's a known fact: Rodents will steer clear of areas where the flora seems unsafe for consumption.
