Redbridge research reveals deep community support for the national disability insurance scheme, underscoring why both sides of politics are wary of criticism despite massive cost blowouts.

Already a subscriber?Australians consider the National Disability Insurance Scheme to be a fundamental government service on par with Medicare and want fraud and waste to be fixed to ensure its sustainability, focus group research shows.

“We were consistently struck by the universality and degree of empathy and compassion respondents from all demographic segments exhibited towards people with a disability,” Redbridge said in its report.“Regardless of political orientation … there was broad support for the notion that the NDIS’ intent is integral to fairness, ‘levelling the playing field’ not just for respondents, but for their families as well,” the report said.

“Almost everyone has a family member or knows someone with a disability, and they don’t want the scheme undermined,” Mr Samaras told“The public are approaching this from a different angle. They are saying ‘I don’t want this undermined. I want this to succeed. So I don’t want politicians to play with it’. Across all political constituencies there was strong empathy for people that are relying on the NDIS.”He said the main takeaway for policymakers was to frame changes around NDIS participants.
