Smoke is seen from a brush fire burning off Interstate 8 and McCain Valley Road on July 1, 2024. More than 230 firefighters were battling the 1,000-acre McCain fire in East County Tuesday, trying to make progress before winds picked up in the afternoon.
“It is hot and dry, and we are supposed to get up to the mid-90s with 14 percent humidity, with some winds picking up this afternoon,” Cal Fire spokesperson Capt. Mike Cornette said. Forecasters said they expect extreme heat in the region through the end of the week. The Golden Acorn Casino has been designated as a site to temporarily receive evacuees. More than 140 residents had left their homes, Cornette said.
