Law enforcement officials were tipped off by urine that could be smelled 20ft from the hosue.
As well as the 700 rats, they found eight dogs, two rabbits, a cat, parrot and 55 pet rats. The house reeked of urine and feces.
The elderly man is now in care of social services, who also helped Vandermaesen’s older sister find temporary accomodation. She is being treated as a potential second victim of Vandermaesen’s neglect.
