Sarah Ferguson presents Australia's premier daily current affairs program, delivering agenda-setting public affairs journalism and interviews that hold the powerful to account. Plus political analysis from Laura Tingle.
LAURA TINGLE, CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT: It’s been almost a decade since Jacqui Lambie arrived in Canberra as a neophyte senator, part of a colourful band that made up Clive Palmer’s Senate team.JACQUI LAMBIE: Well, I think when it comes to Sharia Law, you know to me, it's it's obviously involves terrorism.LAURA TINGLE: But Lambie has learnt much about parliament, about messaging, and about politics since then.
LAURA TINGLE: Tasmania votes under a different electoral system to the rest of the country which sees multiple MPs elected for each seat. To outsiders, just why this is contentious might not be clear since both major parties have, sort of, committed to it despite the desperate need for better essential services in the tiny state.JACQUI LAMBIE: We will need to have a look at that contract. I have no idea what that contract looks like. I'm hoping that contract is not watertight.
Combined with big swings against Labor in two recent Queensland by-elections, these results all have implications for trends in federal politics. TONY BURKE, WORKPLACE RELATIONS MINISTER: Australia doesn't need a deep, divisive debate at the moment. So, in good faith, we provided the draft legislation to the Opposition. They'll work it through, and we'll see what they come back with.
DAVID POCOCK, ACT INDEPENDENT SENATOR: The Albanese Government legislating a backdoor approvals process for offshore gas developments stinks.
