Nestlé has announced the global discontinuation of its Vegan KitKat, citing declining demand and increasing manufacturing complexities. The popular dairy-free chocolate bar, launched in 2021 as a pioneering plant-based alternative in the mainstream chocolate market, will be phased out of UK supermarkets by summer. This decision has sparked disappointment and criticism among vegan consumers who highlight the product's appeal and the higher price point compared to its standard counterpart.
The launch of Vegan KitKats was a significant milestone for many, being among the first mainstream chocolate bars to offer a plant-based alternative in 2021. Although Veganuary might still be going strong for some, Nestlé has announced the global discontinuation of this dairy-free confectionery, with UK shops expected to see their supplies dwindle within months. A spokesperson for Nestlé stated: 'We know that KitKat Vegan has been popular for those looking for dairy or vegan alternatives.
Unfortunately, global demand has been reducing to the point that production was making manufacturing more and more complex and we have now made the difficult decision to discontinue the product. We know there will be some disappointment, however it will still be available in the UK and Ireland until the summer.' The news has been met with dismay across various social media platforms. Within the Vegan Food UK Facebook group, the reaction to Nestlé's decision has been particularly strong. One member said: 'No! You are just cruel! It’s one of the only nice tasting vegan chocolate products that my daughter can eat without an allergic reaction. We’ve been paying your over inflated prices for a long while and now you’re taking that little bit of pleasure away from her and so many thousands of others.' To put into context, the classic four-finger KitKats retail at 75p each at Tesco, whereas their vegan counterparts are priced at £1. The increased costs associated with the special variety of KitKat have not gone unnoticed, with one individual pointing out: 'Maybe if they weren’t double the price of their standard KitKat, more people would buy them! Plus finding them is hard enough'. Another person said, 'Nooo! I love these, so do my kids! Maybe if they’d sold them in multi pack and brought the price down, and put them next to the regular Kit Kats instead of only in the ‘free from’ aisle.' A different user echoed this difficulty, adding: 'It’s lovely but you can’t find them in shops in small towns- there was no roll out in the UK, no advertising either.'
