Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has temporarily paused a controversial judicial reform plan after mass protests disrupted the country this week.

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out to the streets of cities across Israel day after day to protest the planned judicial overhaul, which critics argue remove the country’s system of checks and balances.

The heightened demonstrations were triggered by the Prime Minister’s dismissal of his defence minister after he publicly called for the laws to be scrapped. The temporary pause came from a “will to avoid the rift within the people”, Mr Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Monday evening . The planned overhaul would allow the parliament to easily overrule Supreme Court decisions and hand control of judicial appointments to the government of the day. Picture: AP Photo/Tsafrir Abayov
