Streaming giant Netflix has quietly added a brutal true crime documentary on a crime that shocked Britain. The Murder of Rachel Nickell delves into the chilling moment a young mother was killed in broad daylight on London's Wimbledon Common - with her two-year-old son the sole witness to the crime.
The must-watch true crime documentary takes viewers back to 1992 and includes chilling footage, heartbreaking first-hand accounts and insights from experts as it plunges viewers into the frenzied attack and the investigation that followed. As well as hearing from Rachel's son himself, it unpacks how a flawed investigation led to the wrong man's prosecution as well as the family's pain as the search for the real killer took years.
The Murder of Rachel Nickell is now available to stream on Netflix from today , but the heartbreaking watch is guaranteed to make your jaw drop. A Netflix synopsis reads: "In 1992, a young mother is killed in broad daylight on London’s Wimbledon Common, leaving her two-year-old toddler as the sole witness.
"Exploring the shocking real events behind the drama series The Witness, this gripping documentary from BAFTA-nominated director Lucy Bowden examines the notorious, years-long police investigation that followed. "Featuring exclusive archive footage, first-hand accounts from family members, and insights from leading forensic experts, the film unpacks how a flawed, highly-publicised inquiry led to the wrong man's prosecution, before a stunning breakthrough reignited a family's fight for justice over a decade later.
" Rachel was just 23 when she was brutally killed in 1992 as she took her dog for a walk, having been attacked and stabbed just under 50 times. Her son Alex, just two at the time, was the only witness. It wasn't until 2002 when a breakthrough occurred, with the case being re-opened. This came after Colin Stagg spent over a decade under suspicion, having been wrongly been accused.
A trailer was previously released by Netflix, including a previously unseen home video of Alex speaking about his mum, and viewers were left emotional after watching it. One person remarked: "Utterly heartbroken watching that sweet lovely boy talk about his Mum's murder.
" Another said on TikTok: "I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch it. Too sad.
" A third added: "This story is so heartbreaking. " As well as the documentary, three-part drama series The Witness is also released today, based on the true story of what happened, following Alex and his father dealing with the brutal act of violence.
